AI Shows Strong Results in Japan’s University Test
In Japan, a popular artificial intelligence chatbot ‘ChatGPT’ recently took the national university entrance examination. According to a Tokyo-based company, the AI achieved perfect scores in nine subjects, including mathematics, chemistry, informatics, and politics and economy.
The test was conducted by LifePrompt Inc., which has been testing ChatGPT since 2024. In total, the AI was tested on 15 subjects and achieved an accuracy rate of 97 percent. However, its weakest subject was the Japanese language, where it scored 90 percent. Experts say this is because Japanese requires strong skills in organizing and understanding written information.
Every year, about 500,000 students take this two-day exam when applying to national and some private universities. The results are used by over 800 universities and colleges across Japan.
For subjects commonly chosen by students applying to the University of Tokyo, one of Japan’s most competitive universities, ChatGPT scored 97 percent, a large improvement compared to previous years. Researchers believe this improvement is due to better reading and processing abilities in the AI.
During the test, ChatGPT did not use the internet and answered questions using only its internal data.
