Old Sounds, New Interest: Japan’s Vinyl Revival

In Fukui, Japan, old music is becoming popular again. Many young people are discovering vinyl records, while older adults are returning to them. Even in a world of streaming and digital music, vinyl records are making a comeback, showing a revival of older styles.

At the Kawai Community Center in Fukui, visitors can experience music from the past. The space looks like a young person’s room from the 1960s and 1970s. There are about 1,500 vinyl records, including pop, jazz, and classical music.

Visitors can choose a record and listen to it for free. This allows them to enjoy music in the same way people did many years ago.

Many records were donated by a local audio equipment dealer, Toshihide Naito, and other residents. Some of these records belonged to family members who have passed away, making them very unique.

Vinyl records are loved for their imperfections. Even the small scratches create a warm feeling when listening.

The vinyl corner started as a small event and officially opened in 2019. Now, people from different places come to visit. Some older visitors come regularly to reminisce about their youth, while younger people enjoy trying something new.

The center also hosts special events. One event celebrated famous music from the past, helping visitors learn more about vinyl records.

Today, listening to vinyl records is not only about music, but also about memories and connecting with others.
